Increasing use of helicopters to fight forest fires

2:06 min

The use of helicopters to fight forest fires in Sweden has increased significantly this year.

Forty fire fighting operations using helicopters were carried out between April and June this year compared to 24 during the same period in 2019.

According to the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency, MSB, the increase is not only due to the hot and dry spring but the fact that the country's rescue services have become more aware that MSB can offer use of the helicopters after it signed an agreement with companies owning the helicopters last year.

Before 2019, each individual rescue service in the country was responsible for signing its own contracts and also for footing the bill if a helicopter was called in to water bomb a fire.
